Knee with osteoarthritis

In regards to treating osteoarthritis of the knee, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The severity or stage of osteoarthritis, the patient's age, and their functional needs all play a role in determining the best course of action. In cases of mild osteoarthritis, an adaptation of activities and infiltrations may be sufficient.

Some types of surgery aim to preserve the joint. This may be a partial replacement or resurfacing of part of the joint, or simply cleaning the joint and repairing the damage. In more severe cases, however, prosthetic surgery may be required. It consists of completely replacing the damaged joint with an artificial joint.

Revision prosthetic surgery is also an option for patients who already have a prosthesis in place and are having problems with their artificial joint. Regardless of the approach taken, the goal of surgical procedures for osteoarthritis of the knee is always to relieve pain, improve joint function, and therefore quality of life.
